NOTE:

On all the displays of food and nutrients the items in Green represent above average food selections based on the numerical average of all 7400 items. Thus you can choose an above average food for any diet you wish to follow. Two situations to be aware of are for carbohydrate and fat; the chart has green for low carb foods, but if you wish high carb, you would have choose the white box selections. Also for fat food items, the saturated fat is considered bad so low values are in green; mono fat and poly fat are thought to be good fat and higher values are in green; but these items still are fat so may want to avoid very high values.
Watch your calories and fat...
or you'll have to use the track !

The food and nutrition info on the left is meant to be an aid to shopping; the nutrients listed are all for 100g so you can properly compare each food to see which is healthiest for you to purchase.  This standard 100g quantity allows you to compare 'apples to apples' as they say in accounting (the data display was checked by a degreed accountant). You can sort the data (click on column heading) by calories, protein, carbohydrate, etc to find the most nutritious food for your diet needs.

The Calorie Counter on the right was developed from the same data and gives you calories for different gram measures such as per cup or per teaspoon.  The data is displayed for a food group which enables you to compare like foods with each other.

We also have a SEARCH page below where you search for a particular food. Enter the food you want to search all items for that food as listed in the SR21 data appear. Its best to enter one or two descriptive words such as 'broccoli' or 'salmon' or 'oat bran'.

The data is from the latest  US Department of Agriculture food data base SR21 released in September of 2008 and contains nutrition info on over 7400 foods.  The data is kept up to date for the latest food products an calorie information with old products removed.

The USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (SR) is the major source of food composition data in the United States. It provides the foundation for most food composition databases in the public and private sectors. As information is updated, new versions of the database are released. This version, Release 21 (SR21), contains data on 7,412 food items and up to 140 food components. It replaces SR20 issued in September 2007.

Data have been compiled from published and unpublished sources. Published sources include the scientific literature. Unpublished data include those obtained from the food industry, other government agencies, and research conducted under contracts initiated by USDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS). These analyses are currently conducted under the National Food and Nutrient Analysis Program (NFNAP), in cooperation with the National Cancer Institute and 16 other offices and institutes of the National Institutes of Health (Pehrsson et al., 2000). Data from the food industry represents the nutrient content of a specific food or food product at the time the data is sent to NDL. The values may change due to reformulations or other processing changes by individual companies between the time that SR is released and the next update of this database. Values in the database may be based on the results of laboratory analyses or calculated by using appropriate algorithms, factors, or recipes, as indicated by the source code in the Nutrient Data file. Not every food item contains a complete nutrient profile.
